As I was placing an order for pants at Lands End.com today, I remembered back to a shopping trip with Dave. The year was 1997 and we'd been dating for a year.
His holier-than-swiss-cheese pants were a sad reminder of the 80's and he desperately needed new ones. So, he and I took a trip to the mall and found a jean store.
He immediately grabbed a pair of Levi 501 jeans in the size of his old pair: 34x36.
He sauntered into the dressing room and I waited, patiently, to see the fit. After a few minutes he came out, sucking in his stomach. The waist of the pants were tight, his tummy straining slightly over the top.
"Hmmm...." I said, "Maybe you should try on a pair with a waist of 35."
A look of horror crossed his face. "The day I buy a pair of 35's is the day I kill myself."
Needless to say, we found a pair of Relaxed Fit jeans in 34x36 and he went home happy.
Fifteen years later, as I placed an order for 36x36 pants, I couldn't help but chuckle. The man is still living.
