When the phone rang, I wasn't expecting a wrong number. I certainly wasn't expecting the person to ask for Love.
"I'm sorry, there is no Love here." I said, and hung up. The phone rang again immediately. It was the same man.
"Did I dial this right?" He said. "The number I'm trying to reach is xxx-xxx-L*O*V*E" After a moments hesitation he laughed, "OH, I'm sorry, I'm one number wrong. I dialed a six instead of a seven. Sorry".
I looked at the number and agreed...He was one number off. I grimaced at the thought of my home phone number being so close to this other place. How many more lonely people would be calling this number, looking for some dating service.
It didn't take long before the next call came a few days later. "Hello, is this Love?"
"Sorry, there is no Love here. You have the wrong number."
"Didn't I dial xxx-xxx-L*O*V*E?" He asked, urgency in his voice. Somehow, he sounded a bit despondent. I wondered how desperate this guy was for a date.
I told him he was one number off and he apologized, relieved.
Out of curiosity, I decided to look up this LOVE number and see what type of services it gave to such desperate sounding men. I imagined women, sex, drugs, Rock&Roll, and maybe even donuts.
As the sight loaded onto my computer screen, I felt a little chagrined at my earlier thoughts. "LOVE.....Serving the community in the Name of Christ. Helping to mobilize churches to better serve their communities through volunteering."
OH! A community service group that works through the local churches.
When I told Dave, he grabbed the phone, "I wonder if our number spells anything."
I took a look, "Oh - it does.....K*R*U*D"
