I would like to introduce Ian Healy's first published book, The Milkman and offer up my review on this short novel.
"One question has plagued UFO researchers for sixty years: What's the deal with aliens and anal probes?" Ian answers this question and more with a hilarious action-packed joy ride in a snowplow. Liza, a reporter, and Blake, a night delivery milkman join forces with The Quiet Sons biker gang to save Earth from an exceedingly stinky alien species.
This Science Fiction book is not to be taken too seriously. Don't expect any soul searching, in-depth symbolism, value statements, or political views. This book is all about fun, adventure, and excitement. The Milkman isn't a hefty read or one that leaves a brain mired in technicalities. Instead, I found an enjoyable book from start to finish. I giggled, held my breath, and laughed. Sure there are some scenes that seem a little far fetched and most true Sci-Fi fans (and space gurus) will be left shaking their heads. But this book isn't about all that technical crap - it's about the relationships between the characters.
All the characters are likable, even the aliens. The main characters are fairly stereo-typical; Liza is a single reporter hungry for a story, Blake flashes with chauvinistic "Han Soloisms" style, and Big Al is the big bad Biker Leader with Teddy Bear appeal. It's the extra characters that added the spark to this story. I couldn't help but laugh at Junkyard Bob, Bunky, and Sasha Sixteen. Are they believable as genius bikers? Not quite, but they all have a sense of humor and can really rip the one-liners.
This book is a good "pool companion"; a simple, light-hearted read. The writing is good, the dialogue snappy, and the descriptions well composed. The action begins at a seedy bar and doesn't let down until the explosive ending.
One word of warning - this is an adult-only book filled with bad language (what do you expect with a biker gang?), enough fart jokes for a proctologist convention, and a few sexual-tension filled moments. Buy it and enjoy the read.
