A few weeks ago, Beccy at Peppermint Tea posted her recipe for Flapjacks. There was some immediate "Lost in Translation" moments. I thought a flapjack was a freaking pancake and had NO CLUE what Golden Syrup was.
Well - now I know. My husband found a jar at the Portland Whole Foods store. (they have almost everything)
Well, let me tell you - it is absolutely the most divine liquid substance in the world. I cannot believe that Golden Syrup is not a staple in every American cupboard. Considering our propensity for sweets I am amazed that Golden Syrup has not taken over the very aisles of the grocery store and booted tasteless corn syrup out the door. It tastes similar to caramel; smooth and sweet. It should be relabeled Golden Nectar of the Gods.
And yes, I made a batch of flapjacks. They were a little on the soft side. But, did that matter? No. These delicious sweets did not last 24 hours. Between me, my husband, and my son, the pan was gone.
The name Flapjack is very misleading. It should be called "Buttery Toffee Oat Bar". It just melts in the mouth and afterwards one must drink a glass of milk or have sex.
So, I made another batch. I used slightly less butter and cooked it slightly less than recommended, so they came out even better (closer to Beccy's picture). Conviently, they had cooled just as my mom and dad arrived to spend the rest of the week with us. Um - No, the flapjacks didn't even last 12 hours. They are THAT DAMN GOOD. (They didn't even last long enough to get a picture)
Thank you Beccy for such a delicious tasty treat (another reason to blog. I would have never known about this before!!!!) and also Beccy - I HATE YOU for now giving me something so wonderful that immediately will go to my butt. (Okay, I don't really hate you - I secretly love you for this Golden Nectar of the Gods, but my butt hates you)

Karmyn I'm delighted you found the syrup and made the flapjacks. I've actually lessened the cooking time as well and I prefer them slightly soft and gooey. All you have to do is remember the amount of oats in them (healthy) and forget about the rest of the ingredients (not so healthy).
P.S. My butt hates me too!

I have to say that I always thought flapjacks were pancakes too. However I do know what Golden Syrup is, before we cold get maple syrup over here, we used to use it on our pancakes. If you want to go really hard core, try Treacle.

Ours used to come in tins, now it comes in plastic jars.

Golden Syrup? I've never heard of it... but I will definitely look for it at the health food store!! Is it a regional thing? Maple syrup is our staple here in the Great Lakes State!

Karmyn, oh, my....you had some FANTABULOUS lines in this post!!! "Drink a glass of milk or have sex"???? If I HAD been drinkin' milk, I'm quite sure it would've come out my nose at that precise moment. You're PASSIONATE endorsement has piqued my curiosity even more than Beccy's original post....between the two of you, I'm gonna have to try this little slice of heaven.
Except I might wait a few months, bathing suit weather is upon us, and I don't need nothin' for my butt to hate :/.
Hug your mama for me :).

Second I am going to search for that nector of the Gods.

My friend in Scotland used to put it on bread, then smoosh some bananas on top and make a sandwich. Always grossed me out but he was a cyclist...needed his energy apparently.

Does it come in a tube? OK, now I'm curious and will have to go looking for this new found treat. And, plan to try Beccy's flapjack recipe this weekend. Did she give us a calorie/carb count on these things/

I'm with enidd we had golden syrup on porridge when i was a child back in the 50's, it was also used for sandwiches (can't imagine eating that now far to sweet) but home made flapjacks wonderful.
Matt I brought back some maple syrup when I was in Vermont last year for my grandson (beccy's eldest) and it was a great success on his pancakes.
